The Grey Geisler Cattle
…an Alpine Tradition
The Grey Geisler cattle, one of the oldest Alpine cattle breeds, is raised by several farmers in the Villnöss Valley. Traditionally valued for milk, meat and draught work, the breed is now prized for its high-quality milk used in cheese production and its excellent beef, ideal for both fresh consumption and processing.
Proihof is a founding member of the Grey Geisler Cattle Association, established in 2013 and dedicated to preserving this traditional breed. Together with other member farms, Proihof actively supports local livestock farming through the production of premium-quality meat. The shared goal is to safeguard small-scale farms and alpine pastures and to prevent the abandonment of traditional agriculture.
Since 2025, Proihof has been run as an organic farm. The animals graze exclusively on the alpine pastures of Villnöss, where aromatic mountain herbs give the meat its distinctive flavour. Animal welfare and sustainable, nature-friendly farming are at the heart of everything we do.
Local restaurants refine the meat into delicious regional specialties, highlighting its unique and authentic taste.
